UC Santa Barbara mechanical engineering assistant professor Bolin Liao is at the forefront of efforts to illuminate the behaviors and interactions of the most fundamental energy carriers in materials. An early career research award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will provide him with $150,000 of funding per year for five years to advance understanding of the deep workings of devices such as thermoelectric modules and photovoltaic cells.
