Duncan Mellichamp has received one of two 2018 Oliver Johnson Awards for Distinguished Leadership, recognizing his service in the UCSB and UC systemwide Academic Senates. It is the highest honor given by the Academic Senate, at the systemwide level, to one of its members. Mellichamp championed the cause of securing health-care benefits for same-sex domestic partners and, with his wife, Suzanne, has donated endowed professorships that have enabled multiple faculty hirings in thematically linked interdisciplinary areas.
