In 1993, after many years of work, UCSB College of Engineering professor Shuji Nakamura and two fellow researchers invented the blue LED. That creation enabled the white LED, which has revolutionized lighting around the world and earned Nakamura and his partners the 2014 Nobel Prize for Physics. On Jan. 23, an article Nakamura wrote about how LEDs are benefitting the world, and the developing world in particular, appeared in The National, a news magazine published in the United Arab Emirates.
