College of Engineering ranked 21st in nation

UC Santa Barbara’s College of Engineering is ranked 21st in the nation according to the latest assessment of graduate schools by U.S. News and World Report.

The 2012 rankings, based on data gathered in fall 2010, compared 194 engineering schools that grant doctoral degrees. The College of Engineering at UCSB ranked 11th among public institutions. Last year it was ranked 19th equal overall and 11th among public institutions.

The assessment also rated specialty disciplines. The Materials program at UCSB was ranked 4th in the country, its Chemical Engineering program was ranked 9th, Electrical/Electronic/Communications Engineering was tied for 17th, Computer Engineering was tied for 18th, Mechanical Engineering was tied for 26th and Computer Science was tied for 35th.

The overall rankings for engineering schools were based on opinions from engineering deans and industry recruiters, and statistical indicators of the quality of faculty, research and students—including the number of doctoral degrees granted, the proportion of faculty who were members of the National Academy of Engineering, and expenditure on research.

Rankings for engineering disciplines were based on assessments by department heads in each specialty.
