Grand Challenges in Bioengineering

Do you have an idea that can change the world?

We are delighted to announce a competition on “Grand Challenges in Bioengineering” at the 12th Annual UC Systemwide Bioengineering Symposium held from June 13th-15th, 2011 in Santa Barbara. The session will offer an opportunity to undergraduate and graduate students to present their innovative ideas that address grand challenges in Bioengineering.

To be eligible to participate in this competition, you must be a registered undergraduate or a graduate student at your university and submit an abstract to one of the technical sessions in the symposium. At least one author of the abstract must register before the registration deadline. During abstract submission, you must also indicate the grand challenge (only one) that best fits your submission. This year’s symposium will focus on the following grand challenges.

  • Reduction of health care cost
  • Early detection of human diseases
  • Immunization and prevention of diseases
  • Functional imaging of cells and tissues
  • Predictive modeling of cells, organs and body
  • Artificial organs
  • Targeted intervention of diseases

Submitted abstracts will be evaluated by an expert panel for innovation, relevance to the grand challenge and potential for translation to patients or other appropriate end users. A group of finalists will be selected from the submitted abstracts and will be notified by May 15, 2011. In order to be eligible for the completion, the finalists must attend the symposium and present in the “Grand Challenges in Bioengineering” session on Monday, June 13, 2011. Winners (one grand winner and two finalists) will be announced at the symposium banquet dinner on June 14.
